Artificial Flowers 101
Although referred to as “Silk”, our trees, plants, & flowers are made from a range of different materials including fabrics, plastics, and natural materials. The fabrics have been carefully selected to ensure our flowers look as close to nature as possible. Learn more about what makes a quality artificial flower.
At Silk by Design, we bring together products from several international suppliers to offer our customers a wide range of high-quality products.
Our floral arrangements are handmade at our Durban office by our skilled and dedicated florists.
All of our flowers have stems which are comprised of one or multiple soft wires (depending on the flower) running down the centre which have been wrapped in paper and finished with a layer of plastic.
As each of the stems is wired, they can easily be bent to fit any height of the vase and straightened later if you decide to change how you want to display them!
You will usually require a pair of side cutters or wire cutters to shorten stems as artificial flowers nearly all have a central supportive wire stem.
It’s hard to determine exactly how long your artificial flowers will last however our estimate would be at least 5-10 years depending on the environment in which they have been displayed. We have had ours for years and they are still looking as ‘fresh’ as ever!
While artificial flowers are typically not designed for outdoor settings (UV resistant), they can be effectively used in arrangements or pots that are placed on a covered porch, deck, or other areas shielded from the weather. It’s important to note that prolonged exposure to bright sunlight will cause fading, especially for flowers with vibrant colors.
Rinse your flowers under a hand-held spray tap or lightly swirl your flowers around in a bucket filled with cold water to remove all dust and grime. Dust your flowers with a small, dry paintbrush or feather duster. Always use cold water, never use heat or hot water, as this will cause the colours to fade and there may be some colour transfer. Shine your vase with a soft cloth and window cleaner. Allow them to air dry completely in a shaded area or use a hairdryer set on cool air.

Delivery Details:
We aim to deliver all orders within 3- 4 days which may be influenced by the delivery location.
Processing times depend on the type of products being ordered. Individual plants, flower stems, & trees can generally despatched the same day. Made-to-order products, including floral bouquets and arrangements, will need to be created, which can take up to 14 days.
Delivery charges are calculated per order and will be shown at checkout. We use multiple courier services to ensure only the best quote is used for each delivery.
For retail orders over the value of R1500 delivery is free (certain exemptions may apply) within South Africa.

Float offers an interest-free monthly instalment service using your existing Visa or Mastercard. With no applications or credit checks, enjoy the convenience of bite-sized, monthly payments.
1. You’ll be redirected to the Float website where you’ll review your payment plan as well as enter your credit card details. Note: You have to have a valid Visa or MasterCard Credit Card to use this payment option.
2. Once you have entered your Credit Card information click on the “Pay” button to make payment for your order.
3. Once you have completed the payment process, you will be redirected back to our website confirming your successful order.
Pay for your purchase in 4 equal interest-free instalments via Payflex. You pay 25% upfront, then three payments of 25% over the following six weeks.
1. You’ll be redirected to the PayU payment screen where you can select the Payflex option.
2. The screen will display a summary of your expected payments equally split into 4 instalments.
3. You will be required to enter your ID number and confirm/edit your details.
4. You will then be sent an OTP (one-time pin) to your mobile phone.
5. You’ll then be asked to enter your credit card details.
6. Finally, you will be asked to enter/set up a secure password for your current/new Payflex account.
7. Once you have completed the payment process, you will be redirected back to our website confirming your successful order.
